Sri Lanka’s Festivals
Where tradition, faith, and colour come alive
Sri Lanka Festivals & Culture: A Complete Guide
In Sri Lanka, time is marked not just by the calendar but by festivals. Every month, somewhere on the island, communities gather to celebrate faith, harvest, or heritage. For travellers, these festivals offer a window into the heart of Sri Lankan culture — vibrant, colourful, and deeply spiritual.
With BSL Tours, you don’t just watch from the sidelines. We arrange access, guides, and curated itineraries so you can experience festivals as part of your journey.
Enjoy incredibly colourful festivals throughout the year
Esala Perahera (Kandy, July–August)
The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of Asia’s most spectacular festivals. For ten nights, Kandy comes alive with processions of dancers, drummers, fire-breathers, and elephants adorned in lights and silk.
It honours the Sacred Tooth Relic housed in the Temple of the Tooth, and is a highlight for visitors seeking cultural depth.
We secure seats, guides, and cultural extensions to nearby Sigiriya and Dambulla.

Vesak (Island-wide, May)
Vesak marks the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. Cities and villages glow with colourful lanterns, roadside “dansal” (free food stalls), and devotional displays.
In Colombo, the streets are lined with glowing lights, while in Kandy the celebrations take on a more spiritual tone.
With us, you’ll enjoy both the festive atmosphere and guided insights into Buddhist traditions.

Sinhala & Tamil New Year (April)
In April, the whole island pauses for Avurudu, the Sinhala & Tamil New Year. It marks the harvest season and the start of the traditional calendar.
Families gather to cook special dishes like milk rice, kokis, and kevum. Games, drumming, and astrology rituals are part of the celebrations.
We arrange cultural homestay experiences or guided visits so you can join in the hospitality and feasting.
Deepavali (October–November)
Sri Lanka’s Tamil communities celebrate Deepavali (Diwali) with lamps, sweets, and prayers. Temples glow with light, and families exchange festive food.
In Jaffna and the north, Deepavali offers a chance to experience Tamil culture up close.

Poya Days: Monthly Island-Wide
Every full moon in Sri Lanka is a public holiday, called Poya. Each has its own significance, from Vesak Poya in May to Poson Poya in June, which celebrates the arrival of Buddhism in Mihintale near Anuradhapura.
We integrate Poya experiences into itineraries so you can see local devotion at temples and shrines.
